Electric Pizza Acid Test: The Olsen Twins Gimme Pizza! Song Slowed Down
A very special notice to all of our readers who suffer from acid flashbacks: This is just a video. Specifically, the Olsen Twins Gimme Pizza! music video of yesteryear in slow motion. Made for fun. Please don’t freak out, Helen Hunt style, upon viewing this. I say this, because I understand why you would. It is the exact opposite of the dream-like mellifluous sounds of Beiber in slo mo. Because it is the stuff of nightmares. Olsen Twins, I respect you. No slo mo. It sort of sounds like Digital Underground. Or maybe the direct inspiration for Cleofis Randolph the Patriarch (What up, Deltron 3030 fans!) but, you know, frightening. It’s almost as if this is a brainwash secret message situation. In other news, I could really use some pizza with a bunch of gross toppings-OMG!! Thanks, Urlesque!Mariah Carey

SVU Shows Off Mom-Like Knowledge Of Videogames And Gamers
Law And Order: Special Victims Unit, a show famous for not doing anything ridiculous ever, recently aired this completely not-ridiculous portrayal of a hardcore video gamer and his hardcore video gamer wife who lock their baby in a room in their giant-ass New York apartment, because of video games. The gamers then get pissed off at the police because “This is Level 20, the Kingdom of Galigar!” (were they playing this game?) and also because introverted antisocial gamers always lash out at detectives who arrest and interrogate them. Shut off that damn Nintendo! Congratulations, SVU, for continuing to not be ridiculous: The most not-ridiculous part of the video? This credit: Yup. It was co-produced by an entity named Speed Weed. Someone didn’t want to put their actual name on this product, like it’s a Cinemax softcore porn flick and the editor’s name is listed as “Max Boobs.” Also, the video game they’re playing is scenes from The Lawnmower Man: (via Videogum)Tiger Woods

Sultry Sofa Vergara Talks About Her Accent, Her Role on 'Modern Family' (VIDEO)
Filed under: TV Replay'Modern Family' starlet Sofía Vergara appeared on the latest 'Oprah Winfrey Show' (weekdays, syndicated). She discussed her increasingly impenetrable South American accent, and how it was her dream to one day marry the dumpy guy from 'Married ... With Children.' And okay -- the rest of the cast of 'Modern Family' was there as well. But we'll be honest: sometimes we only have eyes for Ms. Vergara.
Host Oprah Winfrey asked Sophía why her accent seems to be getting heavier, even though she's been living in America for some time now. The actress replied that she actually does it for comedic effect, and gave an example: "I realized that sometimes it was funnier to say 'YOOOUHH' [rather] than 'you.'" Good point! Hello, Bieber! Bieber Doll Forthcoming.
I didn’t realize this hadn’t happened yet. I just assumed that it had. Justin Bieber is going to be made into a doll. Not, like, transformed into one like some sort of horror movie that I’m sure exists wherein people are turned into dolls (is that a movie? If it isn’t, don’t steal that idea, it’s mine), but his likeness will be put into doll form and sold at a store near you. Now instead of just having a doll face, he’ll have a doll body to match. Here it is: Scale of Real Bieber to Doll Bieber is 1:1. BECAUSE HE’S DOLL SIZED. (Nailed it). The reason I thought this doll Bieber would have been put into production months ago is that he is so incredibly pervasive. Like, to the point that he’s referenced by little kids by any means possible. For example, I was tutoring yesterday (because I’m a GOOD EFFING PERSON with only a part time job) and there was this new tutor there named Justin and one of the little girls was like, “You’re name’s not Justin Bieber, is it?” And all the little kids laughed and laughed and laughed, as though they were adults at some Upper West Side cocktail party and someone had just recounted a Maureen Dowd witticism. I don’t know if I’m explaining it correctly. It’s just, Bieber! You know?? Via NY Daily NewsKatie Holmes

'Social Network' Star Jesse Eisenberg Says Internet Can Be 'Cruel'
'It's incredibly painful to read it, so I stay off of it,' actor says of reading about himself online.By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf
Jesse Eisenberg
Photo: MTV News
Early in "The Social Network," a young Mark Zuckerberg returns to his Harvard dorm after getting dumped by his girlfriend. The future Facebook CEO fires up his computer and promptly begins to trash his ex online, writing on his blog, among other things, that she's hardly as busty as she likes to claim.
It's spiteful stuff, and leaves her in tears. And it's just that sort of harsh commentary that has led Jesse Eisenberg, who plays Zuckerberg in the new film, to avoid reading about himself online.
"I know that I'm written about online — we're all written about online," he told MTV News. "It's incredibly painful to read it, so I stay off of it. People can write things that are terribly cruel because of the anonymity of the Internet."
Not everybody on the Web, though, slings hate in his direction. In the summer of 2009, as word of a Facebook movie broke, we suggested Eisenberg was the best choice to play the curly-haired, flip-flop-wearing Zuckerberg. When we reminded Eisenberg that many folks on the Internet tagged him as the best fit for the role, he remained skeptical. "That happens to be something nice, but once you read something like that, you'll read 10 things that are bad, and then you can't sleep at night," he said.
At least he says that now. Back in the fall of '09, when Eisenberg's name came up in "Social Network" casting rumors, we asked the actor if there was any truth to all the gossip, and he jokingly admitted that he was an obsessive self-Googler.
"I read about that online. I search my name every day," Eisenberg deadpanned. "I do it manually, because Google Alerts you can't trust. I have a lawyer do it for me in my bathroom."

Leonardo DiCaprio Calls Gloria Stuart 'A Force'
Actor says he was 'honored' to have worked with the late actress on 'Titanic.'By Jocelyn Vena
Leonardo DiCaprio
Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images
Although they never actually appeared onscreen together in "Titanic," Leonardo DiCaprio has fond memories of Gloria Stuart, his co-star from the 1997 blockbuster who passed away at age 100 over the weekend.
"Gloria Stuart was a force both on and off screen," the actor said in a statement about the actress, who was diagnosed with lung cancer five years ago and died in her home in Los Angeles. "An amazingly sweet person, a fantastic actress, and someone who always fought for what she believed in."
DiCaprio added that he felt privileged to have worked with Stuart, who began her career in the 1930s. "She was one of the last great actresses from the Golden era of Hollywood," he continued. "I was honored to have worked alongside her. She will be missed."
In the '30s, Stuart was under contract with Universal and 20th Century Fox and acted alongside big names of the time like Claude Rains, James Cagney and Shirley Temple. But in 1939 her contract with 20th Century Fox was not renewed, and she spent a few years struggling to find work before retiring from film in 1946.
Cameron resurrected Stuart's career in 1997 when he cast her as the elder version of Kate Winslet's character Rose Calvert in "Titanic." Stuart nabbed a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nod for the role; she was 87 at the time, making her the oldest actress to receive an Academy Award nomination. Though "Titanic" won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, Stuart lost out to "L.A. Confidential" star Kim Basinger. Stuart's "Titanic" scene was later immortalized by Britney Spears in her hit song, "Oops ... I Did It Again."
Stuart was born on July 4, 1910, in Santa Monica, California. She is survived by a daughter, four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. "When I graduated from Santa Monica High in 1927, I was voted the girl most likely to succeed," she wrote in her 1999 memoir, according to The Washington Post. "I didn't realize it would take so long."

?Indie Family Matters Theme? Is Almost As Trendy As Actual Family Matters Theme
It’s been a solid pop culture week for Family Matters — first it gets a Damon-style shout-out on the 30 Rock premiere, and now an Indie cover of the Family Matters theme song merges onto the information superhighway for our listening pleasure*. (* = ???) It’s about time the internet started referencing things from the early 90s. Katherine Heigl Uses a Smoke Stick on 'Late Show,' Discusses Fighting Her Addiction (VIDEO)
Filed under: TV ReplayOkay, before we get to the important topic of the beautiful actress Katherine Heigl, your humble 'TV Squad' writer has a confession to make. And here that is: I smoke cigarettes. Yes, yes. It's a disgusting and filthy habit, and now you hate me. But if you hate me, then you're going to have to hate Ms. Heigl too -- because she smokes as well.
The actress and former model has been battling her cigarette addiction for six years, ever since she started at age 25. She says that she's "ashamed" of herself for continuing to smoke, and thinks that the habit is "stupid." However, she can't manage to quit. Not that she hasn't tried to stop. On 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS), Heigl reveals that she's tried almost everything in an effort to go "cold turkey." Internet Gets Ass In Gear, Guy Packs A Bag
The internet had an insane two days this weekend. It went down to Cabo, got trashed with its friends, and now it’s back to work and has really and very seriously been dragging ass. I burst into the internet’s office about 15 minutes ago, and I was like “Internet! Come ON, man. Have you done anything today?!” And the internet was like, “Yeah, dude. Chill. I made this guy pack a whole ton of stuff in a bag.” I was skeptical at first. I thought the internet was just trying to look busy. A guy packing a bag? What is that? But then I looked at its video… and it’s weirdly entertaining! This guy really packs the SH*T out of this bag! And the length of this video? MAN ALIVE, this video absolutely kills it on the length. One minute and twenty three seconds. Really solid video length. Don’t ever doubt the internet. It’s doing its work. Where’s this guy going, Efficiencytown? Thanks, Best of YouTube.Kelly Preston

Will Ferrell Says Fan Outcry Hasn't Helped 'Anchorman 2' Chances
Actor tells MTV News the studio is 'indifferent to any sort of public outcry.'By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Covering the saga of "Anchorman 2" is kind of like viewing Panda Watch in '70s-era San Diego: Not a whole lot happens, yet you can't look away.
Five months after MTV News broke the news that negotiations by Will Ferrell and "Anchorman" director Adam McKay with Paramount for a sequel to their 2004 comedy had collapsed, we're still waiting and watching, hoping for good news.
Earlier this month, a small nugget of good news seemed to come in the form of McKay's comment to Collider that fan outcry had helped in their push to get "Anchorman 2" made. Was Paramount closer to getting onboard? Not at all, Ferrell told us.
"Nope," he said at the Toronto International Film Festival promoting "Everything Must Go." "Paramount, which is owned by your parent company, Viacom — so maybe [chairman] Sumner [Redstone] can get involved here in this — but they seem indifferent to any sort of public outcry for this."
The sticking point all along has been an inability to agree on a budget. Ferrell and his co-stars — including Paul Rudd and Steve Carell — cut their salaries, but Paramount remained wary of green-lighting a sequel to a film that was hardly a blockbuster in theaters and only took off on DVD and cable.
" 'Austin Powers' didn't make a ton of money in its first go-round, and then it caught fire in the next one," McKay told us he'd argued.
But Paramount was not convinced, and the sequel collapsed. While McKay holds out hope that the studio might eventually reconsider, Ferrell seems convinced "Anchorman 2" is not to be.
"It's very flattering to us," he said of the fan support. "We love it, but apparently, they don't care."

Taylor Swift May Replace Lindsay Lohan In 'One Night With You'
Lohan is reportedly being dropped from the film due to her ongoing legal struggles.By Jocelyn Vena

Taylor Swift is reportedly being considered to replace Lindsay Lohan in one of her upcoming movies, the romantic comedy "One Night With You."
Swift, who has appeared in movies like "Hannah Montana: The Movie," "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" and "Valentine's Day," could take over the female lead in the flick about a starlet who joins a reality dating show in an attempt to save her career. But, as in most romantic comedies, things don't go as planned when instead she falls for a bartender who happens to hate all things Hollywood. A love/hate relationship ensues between the two.
"It appears the romantic comedy may finally be off the table for Lindsay Lohan. The producers had actually talked to Taylor Swift's agent a few months back about replacing Lindsay, but Taylor was in the middle of her tour," a source said, according to WENN. "Now that Lindsay can't conquer her troubles, they're taking the offer back to Taylor."
Swift's film rep had not responded to MTV News by press time about the report. But Swift stated earlier this year that her focus was on her music, not making movies. Her new album, Speak Now, is due out in October.
"I'm not making movies right now. I'm making music. That's always been my number-one love," Swift said back in June. "It's been so cool to be able to be a part of things that have been really fun, like being in 'Valentine's Day' and getting to guest-star in 'CSI.' I feel like I get to do these little mini-movies when I make music videos, so that kind of fulfills that little need or desire. But if I ever get time, I might like to [act again]."
Regardless of her current status on "One Night With You," Swift was recently seen sporting a basketball uniform, which she reportedly wore for a part in "Todd vs. High School," co-starring Jason Segal.
Lohan, meanwhile, is still onboard to star in the Linda Lovelace biopic "Inferno," despite repeated delays in filming caused by the actress' ongoing legal troubles.

'Wall Street 2' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know
Put your money on our cheat sheet to give you lots of juicy details about 'Money Never Sleeps.'By Eric Ditzian
Michael Douglas in "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps"
Photo: 20th Century Fox
In the fall of 2008, a few weeks after Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy and Washington Mutual collapsed — and the tenor of the U.S. financial crisis turned from panicky to nearly apocalyptic — Fox gave the go-ahead for "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps."
Hooray for capitalism! There's always room for shareholders to profit from even the most dismal economic news. Two years later, with the country still shackled by high unemployment and out-of-control debt, "Wall Street 2" bullied its way into theaters Friday (September 24). The Oliver Stone-directed film arrives nearly 23 years after the Oscar-winning original. The first film also opened in the shadow of financial uncertainty, just a few months after the stock-market crash known as Black Monday. Now, as then, the timing is right for a story about greed.
Michael Douglas returns as Wall Street mover-and-shaker Gordon Gekko, fresh off a jail sentence and determined, at least initially, to expose his industry's borderline criminal excesses. Gekko is set, as well, on repairing his relationship with his daughter (Carey Mulligan), a quest that brings him into an alliance with a young trader named Jacob (Shia LaBeouf). Throughout the film, we get both MBA-level corporate discourse and you-abandoned-me familial hurt feelings.
You needn't know the first thing about a credit default swap, though, before you head to the cinema. MTV News has been betting big on this movie for years, and now we're ready to collect — and share our profits with you: Enjoy our "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" cheat sheet.
Returning to the "Street"
Fox had been developing a "Wall Street" sequel since 2007, when the economy first began its downward spiral. A green light only came in October of '08, amid those bankruptcies and bank failures. Allan Loeb ("21") was tapped to pen the script, and Douglas was reportedly interested in reprising his iconic role.
But in February, Stone told MTV News he had dropped out of the project. "I didn't want to do another 'Wall Street' movie. I think everything I had to say came through," he told us. "I'm just not interested because it's so complex now. I don't think people can understand security derivatives."
By April, however, Stone had changed his mind. He was said to be blown away by Loeb's script and jumped at the chance to helm the sequel. It probably didn't hurt, as well, that Douglas appeared likely to return and that LaBeouf was in negotiations to join up. Josh Brolin, Carey Mulligan, Susan Sarandon and Frank Langella eventually signed on as well.
Getting Down to Business
Shooting kicked off in fall 2009, and we got our first look at Douglas and LaBeouf on set in October: the elder statesman rocking a casual-Friday look, the young buck in some designer duds. Charlie Sheen, who starred in the original, agreed to appear in a cameo for the new flick. "He came in. It was fun for a day. It was good to see him again," Douglas told us later.
The trailer dropped in January, giving us a grizzled, post-jail Gekko, copious shots of the go-go-go Wall Street and the supposition that greed, once good, has become legal. The movie debuted in May at the Cannes Film Festival.
Letting the Bulls Loose
As the release date approached, we got an opportunity to chat with the cast in New York and at the Toronto International Film Festival.
What convinced Stone to return for the sequel, he told us, was the chance to create "a completely new Gekko" and to dramatize an economic crisis he called "a heart attack, a real triple bypass to capitalism."
LaBeouf, meanwhile, was pulled in by the opportunity to work with Stone, whom he dubbed "the most dangerous filmmaker alive" in the 1980s and '90s. Plus, the actor views Gekko as even more compelling than key characters in two of his other starring franchises: Optimus Prime of "Transformers" and Indiana Jones.
"He's got more bite, he's more dangerous, he's the most dangerous of the three," LaBeouf said. "Also the most interesting, I think. There's something in how tangible and visceral it is. Whereas the other films are fantasy films where the suspension of disbelief is necessary for you to get into the movie. This isn't that. It's a very tangible world, and you're living in the midst of the twilight of American economic dominance."

'Glee' Tackles Britney Spears' Snake-Charming VMA Set

Hold tight, Gleeks! The all-Britney Spears episode of "Glee" is just days away, and details about the pop star's tribute are trickling in.
We already know the McKinley high-schoolers are going to revamp Brit's debut smash " ... Baby One More Time" and her Madonna match-up "Me Against the Music." The song-and-dance crew has also reached beyond Spears' trendsetting clips to one of her iconic stage performances: the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards rendition of "I'm a Slave 4 U."
A picture surfaced Friday (September 24) of the megastar's "Glee" namesake Brittany (played by Heather Morris) rocking a bejeweled green-and-blue two-piece similar to Spears' skimpy VMA ensemble, with a yellow boa draped over her shoulders.
Morris recently opened up about the arc of Tuesday's episode, dishing that the glee clubbers rebel against Schuester's ban on retooling Spears' hits.
"Through a special substance, I go under and have a couple of dream sequences — not only myself, but with Santana [Naya Rivera]," Morris told Australian magazine TV Week. "A lot of it has to do with Will [Matthew Morrison] not allowing us to perform Britney Spears songs, because he doesn't agree with what kind of entertainer she is, so it's our fight to do Britney. But it's not just us doing Britney in show choir; there are other sequences — it's our homage to her."
Tuesday's show is shaping up to be a busy one for Morris, who is also vamping it up opposite Spears herself in their reworking of "Music." However, the actress insisted her previous encounters with Spears helped her stay cool around the pop icon.
"It wasn't really nerve-racking, because I've met her before and I wasn't really overwhelmed by who she is," she said. "But the idea of what she has given us for the show and, for me, getting to dance with her and play with her on set, I was just staring at her at one point and thinking, 'This is just so frickin' awesome.' "

Warm Blockbuster Memories
The video rental store chain, Blockbuster, has been in trouble for a few years as Netflix has been taken over an increasing share of the market. Today it was announced that Blockbuster is filing for bankruptcy protection. Their stores will continue operating for now, but it’s not looking good for them. In recognition of what is likely the end of Blockbuster, I think we should all share our memories of the videos that we always remember seeing in our local Blockbuster stores. You know, those movies that just always stuck out to you. You wouldn’t necessarily rent them, but they would catch your eye and you always knew where they were in the store. For example: Warlock. What the f*ck was Warlock? I have no idea, but there is no video cover that is more clear in my mind. He came from the past to destroy the future? What? The future in the past is still just the future. Why couldn’t he destroy it from then? And if you can go into the future, why half ass it? Why go to the future that’s still before the future that you want to destroy. Just go to the future you want to destroy and destroy it in the present. Right? Anyway, I’ll always remember that video cover and never ever see the movie. Now this next movie, I actually saw. I think a lot of us did. But much more iconic than the movie was the video cover. Remember the cover for The Wizard? I made my mom rent this for me when I was about six years old. Then I was so mad when it ended, and at no point during the movie had Fred Savage and that girl held up that kid on their shoulders. I remember thinking, “Why would they put that on the cover if it never happened?!” That was my main criterion for judging movies at that point in my life. I wanted the video covers to accurately represent the movie. The Wizard failed miserably at this. “Bull!” I would mutter to myself whenever I passed by it at the Blockbuster. This next one is from later in life. I’ve actually heard good things about this movie, but never seen it. All I know for sure was that it was in the new release section of my hometown Blockbuster store for the entire duration of my college years. You know how you know something isn’t a new release anymore? If you’ve had enough time to complete an undergraduate degree and live in three different cities since it first appeared in the new release section. And now, in a perfect synchronization with the changing world, Bubba Ho-Tep is available to watch instantly on Netflix and I see it every time I browse through their suggestions for me. Bubba Ho-Tep has come from the past to destroy my future. Are these movie covers you guys remember? Is this just a me thing?Kristi Gibson

Jerry Seinfeld Roasts Larry King On 'Larry King Live' (VIDEO)
Filed under: TV ReplayOver the years there have been some surreal moments between Jerry Seinfeld and Larry King on 'Larry King Live' (weeknights, 9 PM ET on CNN.) On what will probably be Seinfeld's last appearance on the show -- as King is stepping down in December -- the comedian peppered King with some good-natured ribbing.
"This is the funniest show on TV," Seinfeld declared.
"What?" was how a confused King responded to that.
"This show makes no sense. And you sit here and ask the questions, night after night, and nobody answers them, and nobody cares, and it goes on and on, Seinfeld explained, as the studio erupted in laughter. Here?s A Little Indian Kid Dancing With A Transformer
I don’t know much about Indian cinema, but I like to imagine that their transformer-dancing-with-a-little-kid movies are like our buddy cop movies. I hope five of these come out a year and they’re all the same. And then jaded Indian film majors are all like, “Really, another transformer-dancing-with-a-little-kid movie? Oh, let me guess, the kid is little and the transformer is a car and they dance to a repetitive song? Jesus Christ, my screen play has no chance, and frankly I don’t want it to if this is what audiences want.” That’s what I hope jaded film majors in India are like. Because of how many transformer-dancing-with-a-little-kid movies they keep making over there. N.E.R.D. Call Gorillaz Tour 'A Natural Marriage'
Pharrell says Damon Albarn has 'turned his imagination into the world's reality.'By Mawuse Ziegbe

Animated alterna-pop group Gorillaz will crisscross North America this fall, and they've lined up an eclectic roster of hip-hop dogs, soul legends and indie upstarts for their upcoming trek, including De La Soul, Bobby Womack and Little Dragon. Also hitting the road with the "Stylo" crew are fellow genre-melding outfit N.E.R.D., who will open up for Gorillaz starting October 3.
Gorillaz are known for staging elaborate technologically enhanced sets designed to blow concertgoers' minds while sidestepping the fact that the group's cartoon bandmembers are, well, just pretend. N.E.R.D. frontman Pharrell Williams told MTV News that he's amped for the outing and respects the way Gorillaz mastermind Damon Albarn has turned a collective of surly, slightly batty, animated personas into a musical force.
"I'm happy to go on tour with the Gorillaz. I think Damon is a genius," Pharrell said. "I love the way that he has exercised his mind and turned his imagination into the world's reality."
In a lineup packed with diverse voices, Pharrell said Gorillaz architects Albarn and Jamie Hewlett invited N.E.R.D. on the road because they share similar approaches to creating music.
"We aspire to continue to offer our perspective to the world in the way that we do, and I think that's the reason why they asked us to be on the road," Pharrell explained. "It's like there's like-mindedness and the appreciation for good music and the stimulation of a child's imagination, so I feel like it was a natural marriage."
After a botched Grammy appearance involving Madonna, Gorillaz are leaving the holographic elements of their stage show behind. They explained earlier this year that their upcoming performances will be similar to the gigs they ripped in the U.K. and at this year's Coachella festival — hopefully featuring special guests who couldn't make previous shows due to Europe's volcanic ash drama.
"[It'll be] the same show, maybe some different songs in the set, some of the other collaborators who will be able to make it," Hewlett told MTV News in April. "We lost loads of people to the volcano — we didn't lose them; they couldn't get on their flight. We were missing Kano and Bashy; Mos Def was in London; the Hypnotic Brass couldn't get there."

James McAvoy Says 'The Conspirator' Has Modern-Day Relevance
Parallels between 19th-century drama and recent U.S. politics exist because the film was 'true to itself,' says McAvoy.By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Robert Redford's "The Conspirator" premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month. The film focuses on the fallout from the 1865 assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, but the political intrigue within could be seen as relevant to present-day politics.
In the film, which hits theaters in spring 2011, fresh-faced lawyer Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy) is charged with defending the assassination conspiracy's lone female defendant, Mary Surratt (Robin Wright); over the course of the trial, Aiken becomes increasingly convinced of Surratt's innocence. Eventually, he realizes that the imprisoned woman could be serving as bait to draw out one of the conspiracy's other central figures.
Given the tenuous political climate — not to mention the political bent of Redford's other movies, like "Lions for Lambs" — it's easy to spot the similarities between the politics of "The Conspirator" and those of the past decade. But according to McAvoy, the parallels aren't intentional.
"I think when they wrote the script, they literally just wrote the script off what happened [during the trial]," the actor told MTV News. "A lot of the dialogue was lifted from speeches that were given — my closing speech, for example, and what I say in defense of Mary Surratt [were] just lifted from what [my character actually] said.
"At the end of that, we were left with a script that was incredibly resonant and relevant and kind of walked a very clear, parallel line with stuff that's been happening [in modern times], but that was only because it was true to itself; it wasn't designed to do that," he continued.
McAvoy noted that Redford's directorial ability resulted in a subtle presentation of the parallels between the politics of the mid-19th century and those of the early 21st.
"I don't think Robert felt that we shouldn't tell the story because it's resonant and relevant," he said. "What he did say is that we shouldn't be trying to look for the parallels and highlighting them, because it will be abundantly clear to the audience if they want to see them. And if they don't want to see them, they'll just get the story of something incredibly important that happened in their country anyway."

The last time Joaquin Phoenix appeared on "Late Show With David Letterman," the actor was dazed and cloaked by a bushy beard and oversized sunglasses. The incoherent chat set off speculation that the once-promising young star was involved in some bizarre Method acting exercise, on drugs, mentally ill — or all of the above.
What a difference a year makes. Phoenix returned to the scene of the crime on Wednesday night to clear the air with Letterman and apologize for his gum-smacking, mumbly indiscretions in February 2009.
"I mean, I think that you've interviewed many, many people, and I assumed that you would know the difference between a character and a real person, so ... but I apologize. ... I hope I didn't offend you in any way," Phoenix said after Letterman sought to shoot down rumors that he was somehow in on the joke the last time around.
"Yeah. Was there a script that you and I were working with?" the late-night host asked.
"No," Phoenix responded.
"Thank you very much," said Letterman. "I was not part of it, was I?"
"No," Phoenix, 35, said.
"Oh, no, no, no. I was not offended," Letterman added after Phoenix's apology. "I'm telling you, it was so much fun. It was batting practice, you know what I mean? Every one of them was a dinger."
Phoenix laughed and said, "I was looking for a beatdown, and I got one ... I want to thank you for that."
The actor was presumably back on Letterman's show to promote his mockumentary "I'm Still Here," which chronicles a shambling year spent trying to launch a rap career, complete with groupie love, drug taking and attempts to get Diddy onboard for Phoenix's album.
The film's director, Phoenix's brother-in-law actor Casey Affleck, recently said the star's wild behavior was part of an elaborate hoax perpetrated for the film. But on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" earlier this week, Affleck was noncommittal when Leno asked if Letterman was in on the joke.
"Neither Joaquin or I ever talked to Dave," Affleck said, noting that he told Letterman's longtime sidekick, bandleader Paul Shaffer, about the actor's plans for the Letterman gig. "But he's not going to tell anybody," Affleck explained of Shaffer.
On Wednesday night, Letterman asked Phoenix if the allegations about the late-night host being in on the gag were true. "No," Phoenix said forcefully.
In the end, Letterman — who had some of his finest comedic moments in recent memory during the original trainwreck — said he was not offended by Phoenix's actions the first time around, although he did suspect something was up.
"I've always liked you. I recognize you as a powerful talent ... then a year and a half ago you come out and honestly it's like you slipped and hit your head in the tub," Letterman said at the top of the interview. "And I knew immediately when you sat down, something ain't right. Because if you're really the way you appeared to be, you don't go out. People don't let guys like you out if you're really like that.
You don't go out."
Phoenix's response at first recalled the chat from last year; he merely stared at Letterman while grinning and nodding his head in agreement, quietly saying, "Yeah." Letterman, perhaps sensing a command performance, sized the actor up and gave the audience a deadpan look.
"So, what do you have to say for yourself?" he finally asked Phoenix.
"Well, thank you for letting me come on the show ... we wanted to make this film," he explained, saying the aim of the movie was to explore the relationship between celebrity, the media and fans.
Letterman joked that he was mostly concerned about how he appeared in the movie, which uses a good portion of the 11-minute 2009 interview. "How do I come off — do I come off good, or do I come off like a jerk?"
Phoenix assured Letterman he didn't come off like a jerk, though he smirked a bit while doing so.
"Now wait a minute," Letterman shot back. "What is that? ... Is it edited in such a way to make it look like, 'Oh, poor Joaquin, big dumb Dave is picking on poor Joaquin?' "
The actor, who seemed disappointed that Letterman hadn't seen the film, assured him it didn't. When Dave then mentioned that his lawyers considered suing over the unlicensed use of the 2009 interview, he explained that his attorneys were told that the footage was OK to include because of fair use copyright provisions.
"Well, hoo ha, guess what? It's no documentary. It was a theatrical ruse," Letterman said.
"So you're going to sue us?" Phoenix asked.
"Now you owe me a million bucks," Letterman warned. "We want a little something for that. My talent fee. It's not my first rodeo. I'd like a little taste of this as well."

Justin Bieber's 'CSI' Cameo Shows Off Dark Side
Fans will have to wait until February for Bieber's story line to continue.By Jocelyn Vena
Justin Bieber plays a troubled teen on "CSI"
Photo: CBS
The appropriately titled season premiere of "CSI," "Shock Waves," found the CSIs chasing down a bomb suspect with a grudge against the cops. With the investigators each dealing with ongoing physical and emotional damage from various other traumatic events, they had to put those feelings aside to chase down the McCann brothers, two young men with some authority issues.
After Dr. Raymond Langston (Laurence Fishburne) is stabbed by inmate Nate Haskell, it's assumed Haskell is the man behind the bombing at a funeral for a dead officer attended by Nick Stokes (George Eads). When they realize that the killer's MO doesn't match that of Haskell's, they are on the trail, looking into every lead, which includes two very key clues that bring us to Jason McCann, played by Justin Bieber in his acting debut.
We first meet Bieber at a community center, where he is defending the man who helped raise him, Ralph. "Ralph was no criminal," Bieber says. "He's a decent man. He took my brother and I when we had no one."
But it's not long before Bieber and the CSIs meet at the community center, where they are trying to track down a cell phone used to detonate one of the bombs. In Bieber's several scenes, his biggest and most convincing acting comes during his interrogation by Stokes.
After learning that a young man fitting McCann's description bought a toy plane, also used in the explosion, he sits down with the teen to try to find his brother, Alex, the main suspect in the explosion. Bieber is certainly new to acting, but he shows some quick wit and certainly has a screen presence, not to mention that signature hair, while delivering his lines alongside the veteran "CSI" actor.
"Where's your gun, your vest, your badge? You're off work or something?" Bieber quips. "You still represent the authority, everything I hate. It's probably like you hate me."
Soon, however, McCann's confused-kid nature starts to show as he opens up to Stokes about his brother's vindictive nature against the police. "They're going to kill him, aren't they?" he asks about his brother, who most likely is the guy out to settle scores by blowing up cops. "I didn't have anything to do with the bombs. I just bought the airplane."
Soon, we learn that Ralph, the man who cared for the boys, was arrested, though it is never said why or if he actually deserved it. "When the cops arrested Ralph, Alex snapped. Ralph was like a father. He was a decent man," he said, adding his brother's motives: "He told me he was going to scare the cops. He's got a house in old Henderson. You'd better hurry. That show at the funeral was just fireworks compared to what's coming."
Stokes is soon off to find Alex, though it really isn't too hard to find him. Alex is caught buying supplies to make more bombs and is killed by the cops when he pulls his gun, leaving Jason without his older brother but the CSIs with lots of evidence in the back seat of Alex's car.
The evidence? He wanted to blow up police headquarters. Jason's story is kind of left up in the air, but not without one more explosion at an abandoned building being investigated. The catch: Alex was already dead when the explosion was set off. And, with Bieber in custody and an evil look in his eyes, it seems he's keeping the family business alive.
So what will happen when Bieber's McCann returns? Well, fans will have to wait until February to find out.

Ne-Yo Calls Potential Lady Gaga Collabo 'Intriguing'
'Would I jump into her world? Would I pull her into mine?' he says to MTV News.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash

While Lady Gaga has worked with everyone from RedOne and Akon to Teddy Riley and Rodney Jerkins, she sticks to a pretty tight-knit group of collaborators when it comes to her albums, including the forthcoming Born This Way. But that doesn't mean singer/songwriter Ne-Yo hasn't been trying to get in the studio with the "Bad Romance" songstress.
"We've been talking to Gaga's people about some stuff," he said. "Gaga's very difficult to get a hold of as of late, for obvious reasons. She's very busy. We've been talking to her people about doing some stuff."
Ne-Yo is best known for working with artists like Rihanna and Beyoncé and crafting pop-influenced R&B tunes. So how would he apply his hitmaking formula to the dance queen's music? "I have no idea! That's kind of the intriguing thing that I have no idea what that song would sound like," he said. "Like, would I jump into her world? Would I pull her into mine? I don't know, but I feel like it would be interesting to see. Maybe we should get a camera crew over when that happens."
While a Gaga collabo isn't a sure thing, Ne-Yo has confirmed that he's working with Beyoncé on her next album.
"The thing about working with Beyoncé is that she definitely has her own agenda," the "Irreplaceable" songwriter said. "She's an artist that knows exactly what she wants to do.
"She's going to give you directions [like] 'Here's where I'm going, so here's where I need you to be,' " Ne-Yo explained. "And, you know, I'm a person that follows direction well. [And she'll be like], 'So this is the sound, this is the vibe; make it happen.' And I write and she likes it or she doesn't. And in this case she did, and there you have it."

N.E.R.D. Play New Music At Times Square Show
Pharrell and Shay play new song 'Help Me' from Nothing album.By Mawuse Ziegbe

NEW YORK — Braving the unexpectedly intense heat of a New York City fall day, N.E.R.D. brought even more fire to their Thursday (September 23) Times Square performance. Shay Haley and Pharrell Williams of the hip-hop alterna-rock crew (fellow member Chad Hugo was
absent) played to a slew of die-hard N.E.R.D. fans at a day-long event in celebration of Honda's spankin' new CR-Z Hybrid Coupe.
During a warm-up set from downtown selector DJ Lindsay, featuring sunny tunes from Janelle Monáe and Madonna, concertgoers milled about under the supersized Times Square ads as a clock counted down the seconds until N.E.R.D.'s performance. Then, around 12:30, the duo hit the stage under the powerful midday sun, aptly opening the set with their balmy summer single "Hot-N-Fun." Supported by a live five-piece outfit, which included two drum kits, and flanked by two ever-undulating backup dancers, the fellas led an audience of sharply dressed fans — and a few curious tourists along the sidelines — through their sultry hit.
Pharrell and Shay handled the stage with easy swagger, both sporting a basic T-shirt and jeans look and casually rattling off their lyrics, ramping up the energy as needed. After setting the tone with the well-known "Hot-N-Fun," Shay stepped back as Pharrell commanded the stage with "Help Me," a cut from their forthcoming LP Nothing. Pharrell worked the downtempo opening verse with his chill sing-song vocals before the producer/MC bellowed "I won't kill you/but I'll let you die!" as the track crescendoed with frantic instrumentation. Fans bopped along to the song's bluesy valleys and punk-rock peaks and whooped when Pharrell referenced America's ongoing overseas conflicts and yelled "How many want the soldiers to come home?"
The three-song set was brief but didn't sacrifice powerhouse energy as the band closed with their debut hit "Lapdance." The dancers went into overdrive as the crowd went nuts to the hard-charging, rap-rock beat. Pharrell showed the city some love, revamping the lyrics and shouting, "...while people in New York gonna make some noise for me!" The band mixed up the mosh-pit energy with a sleek mid-song breakdown, during which Pharrell quipped about the heat, saying "Everybody in New York, Say hello to the sun."
After asking the audience, "How many people know they're gonna change the world someday?" he coaxed the crowd into crouching down — even calling out the fans too cool to get low. Then, Pharrell commanded everyone to jump up and scream "Hell yeah!" as the fans and the frontman rocked out to the roiling beat — in the boiling heat — together.

Swizz Beatz And Lil Wayne Revisit Eminem's 'Stan' With 'Anne'
Producer tells Mixtape Daily about his work with Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and Beyoncé.By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway

Behind the Beats: Swizz Beatz
After all these years of producing hits for everybody (and we mean everybody), Swizz Beatz had an epiphany.
"My position is not to give people singles; it's to give people a sound. Back in the day, when I was working with [DMX] or Eve, I would give that sound. Nowadays, [the industry] is about singles. But your little brother in the room could slip up on a hot beat and have it potentially be a single. That doesn't mean that's gonna connect people to the artist's album."
Swizz said he did some contemplating about what separates the elite artists and dissected the situation.
" 'What's the difference between that person and the next person? Why do people still go crazy over Sade and she ain't come out in X amount of years?' " Swizz began to recall. "It's because they can depend on a sound. Nowadays, you can't depend on a sound. You have to go through iTunes and weed out the fat, weed out all the garbage, what could have been the whole-album sound."
Swizz, whose latest work includes the Kanye West-led posse cut "Lord Lord Lord" and Drake's "Fancy," isn't stopping anytime soon. His beats will be plastered all over your inner ear in the coming months. Besides his upcoming Haute Living LP, the Bronx native is working with Mary J. Blige and Beyoncé and has most of the tracks for Snoop's Dogg's Doggystyle sequel.
"I didn't know I signed up to produce that until the end of that night," Swizz said about his and the Dogg's recent session. Swizz played Snoop more than a dozen new instrumentals, and the vibe was so rich, the West Coast icon decided to make it the foundation for his next album.
Next Wave of Flav
On Mary J. Blige and Beyoncé's new solo albums: "With Mary, it's not about one song. We're six songs in. With B, with all the people I'm working with, it's 'What's the sound?' I think it's gonna be an amazing year for sound in 2011. That's when people will notice it."
On Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle 2: The Doggumentary: "We was in there just banging joints. I'm looking at him, he's feeling them like, 'Put that to the side. Put that to side.' But the things I'm picking are from a fan's standpoint. I'm not picking it from a producer's standpoint. I'm like, 'If Snoop is on this, that's his "Gin and Juice" right there.' I think people want Snoop to stay authentic, which he does all the time. But if he focuses on the sound, that brings them back to something familiar, but it's new, it works. I got the first Doggystyle in my brains."
On Lil Wayne's Haute Living cameo: "Off my album, there was a lot of controversy over this before. The Eminem album before [Recovery], Relapse, I submitted a beat to him called 'Stan 2.' When I was doing an interview and they said, 'What you working on?' [Em] was amongst the people in the lineup I submitted things for. I said, 'I did a track for Eminem called "Stan 2." ' So it got out of hand in the media. He didn't want to do 'Stan 2.' But what I have on my album is a song called 'Anne' with Wayne, which is crazy. To connect the story of what we saying with Snoop, taking something that people remember and putting them in that time and taking it to the next level, the way that Wayne tells Anne he's sorry what happened to Stan. The album is crazy."

The New American Idol Judges Are Super Hot Twins
They just announced the new judges for the upcoming season of American Idol, and it turns out they got some, like, super hot Swedish twins to join Randy Johnson and Brian Seaquest. According to the Huffington Post, those two people are actually Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. But… they kind of look creepily similar here, right? Is it just me? It’s probably just me. But I elled out ell when I saw this picture. Look at their faces! Right next to each other. Come on. Do you at least kind of see it. No? Okay. I’ll just go f*ck off then.Cee-Lo

Selena Gomez Promises 'More Magic' On 'Wizards of Waverly Place'
Singer opens up about the emotions running through the show's final season.By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Christina Garibaldi

Selena Gomez celebrated the release of her new album, A Year Without Rain, with a peppy perfomance of her single "Round and Round" on "Good Morning America" on Thursday (September 23). But even as she concentrates on her music, her thoughts are also on the impending end of her run on the TV show that launched her career, the hit Disney series "Wizards of Waverly Place." And the 18-year-old promises that there will be many intriguing twists as the show comes to its natural end.
"There's a lot more magic and a lot more love stories," she said.
Gomez dished to MTV News about how emotional it is to wrap up work on the show, and she noted that the waterworks will likely get worse as taping progresses. "I'm currently in the middle of shooting season four, but it's really hard," she said. "I think it's going to be extremely emotional. I don't think they're going to have a live audience taping on the last episode upon my request because I'm going to be a wreck. It's going to be really hard."
Gomez compared the ending of the show to a high school graduation, complete with overwhelming emotions. "Every day I go on set and I see these people that I've been with for the past four years, and it really breaks my heart," she explained.
"It's been so much fun and it's been my high school, in a way. So it's gonna be really hard, but it's been great. ... I keep saying every day that I'm not ready [but] I think when the last episode hits, we're going to be like, 'It's time.' "
A Year Without Rain came out on Tuesday, and it represents something of a stylistic shift for the singer. "I think we wanted to do something a little fun. We wanted to do a techno vibe," she said.

To This Crazy Radio Guy: Juice Boxes Are Gay, But They?re Not That Gay
Alex Jones in an insane man who is also a conservative radio show host. I want to be clear. This isn’t the kind of thing where I’m forcing my liberal politics on you by calling a conservative radio host insane as some sort of hyperbolic tool of persuasion. I’m not doing that. This man is literally insane. He is mostly famous for this moment. You might remember this moment. Haha! Alex! You’re so crazy! Anyway, he did another crazy thing recently, and thanks to Videogum I have seen it and now I’m showing it to you. The following is Alex Jones talking about how the government is trying to make us all gay with juice boxes so we don’t have children. And yes, juice boxes are the gayest way of containing fluids — even gayer than Caprisun juice pouches, but they certainly aren’t this gay. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to pound down a Five Alive and then get some D’s in my B.Tiger Woods

Nicki Minaj's 'Right Through Me' Leaks
'It's a really, really pretty song,' Minaj told MTV News last month.By Paul Cantor
Nicki Minaj
Photo: MTV
It's a little early to begin an official countdown to Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday, but with roughly two months to go until the album drops on November 23, fans are getting yet another taste of its songs. Following the success of "Your Love" and "Check It Out," Nicki's "Right Through Me" leaked onto the Internet on Wednesday (September 22).
"It's a really, really pretty song," Nicki told MTV News about "Right Through Me" last month. "Everyone's gonna like it. It's just really insightful but in a very conversational kind of way."
Indeed, the song finds Nicki talking to a lover, admitting that she puts up walls and tries to hide behind a front, but despite all that, her feelings are really transparent. No matter what she does, she can't escape how she truly feels.
The track is all triple-time drum programming and sprightly synthesizer lead lines. It's a perfect backdrop for her to spit, "Know when I'm lying, know when I'm crying, it's like you got it down to a science/ Why am I trying, know you ain't buyin, I try to fight it, back with defiance."
The hook finds Nicki questioning, almost rhetorically, "You see right through me, how do ya'll do that sh--, how do ya'll do that sh--?"
One thing that's noticeably absent from the song is the different character voices Nicki's become known for. In the cover story of Complex magazine's October issue, she says the voices are something she's pulling back on. "I definitely made a conscious effort to tone the voices down a little bit," she said. "Sometimes, the sh-- I say is over people's heads and I feel like I need to dumb it down a bit so people can understand it."

'Warehouse 13' Season 2, Episode 12 (Season Finale) Recap
Filed under: Reality-Free, Recaps['Warehouse 13' - 'Reset']
'Warehouse 13' shut the door on Season 2 with an enormously entertaining final hour. The season ended with an emotional cliffhanger that ruptured the show's warm and fuzzy family dynamic and left some of our major players in tears. It's gonna be a long, long year waiting for it to return to the tube.
So Artie was right after all: H.G. Wells turned out to be a bitter Big Bad waiting to happen, and her tricky turncoat ways caused Myka to doubt her role as a Warehouse agent. It's easy to sympathize with Myka's decision to leave the Warehouse and go on a vision quest: Her choice to trust H.G. almost led to the end of the world as we know it. That's gotta be a heavy load to carry. It certainly makes sense that Myka wasn't able to instantly forgive herself for allowing H.G. to weasel her way into the heart of the Warehouse. Mariah Carey Releases Sequel To 1994 Christmas Album
Move over, Meat Loaf and also the person who came up with the title for 5nal Destination, cause Mariah Carey is releasing a sequel to her 1994 Merry Christmas album entitled Merry Christmas II You, hitting Best Buy front-of-store racks and homes of parents who still purchase compact discs this November: FINALLY! So many loose ends left unanswered on that first album. Who is coming to town? Is there a lot of noise in the night? Was that really all she wants for Christmas? Was Santa Keyser Soze for some reason? Did the Christmas top drop? Surely, closure was Mariah’s main motivation for randomly releasing this album, in addition to this. Unrelatedly, I just noticed that “Silent Night” was composed by someone named Franz Gruber, which is way too close to Die Hard villainy for my tastes. I no longer trust that song. NFL WEEK 2 RECAP: O Brother Where Art Thine Good Teams?
As promised, here’s your NFL Week 2 Recap in the form of stupid pictures. Let’s break down this week’s games in incredible detail one-by-one, in no particular order: Falcons 41, Cardinals 7 To be fair, this result would’ve been even more lopsided if actual falcons had battled actual cardinals. But Rufio was lovin’ it: Jets 28, Patriots 14 The Jets silenced their critics for at least a day or two by scoring three unanswered touchdowns to beat the Patriots after a dominant second half: Mark Sanchez also lamely attempted to re-create the iconic Joe Namath Super Bowl pose: In this instance, the finger stands for “We’re One-And-One.” Eagles 35, Lions 32 This one was a thriller, coming down to the final possession after a successful onside kick by the Lions, but the Eagles stopped them on downs to hold on for the win. Fox’s Chris Myers then narrowly avoided a Michael Vick interview faux pas: Raiders 16, Rams 14 Not the most enthralling matchup of the week, except when these two players re-enacted my favorite position from the Where The Boys Aren’t film series: Steelers 19, Titans 11 The Titans turned the ball over an absurd 7 times against the Steelers, which is not a recipe for success according to this book. Jeff Fisher’s sarcastic clapping throughout the entire game didn’t help morale: Buccaneers 20, Panthers 7 The Bucs jumped out to an unexpected 2-0 start by toppling the Panthers, though QB Josh Freeman wasn’t too happy that he was stuck watching Bucs/Panthers: Colts 38, Giants 14 Peyton trounced Eli in this year’s quadri-annual Manning Bowl, but Two-Face over here was gonna be happy no matter what happened: Packers 34, Bills 7 Poor Buffalo. No visual joke here, none of the game photos were Safe For Work. Bears 27, Cowboys 20 Yikes – the Cowboys were 7-point favorites but dropped their home opener against Chicago to start the year 0-2. Let’s start the betting — how many more patented “Bewildered Wade Phillips” Reaction Shots will we witness between now and his eventual firing? I have my money on 3,500. Meaning he’ll be fired sometime in November. Bengals 15, Ravens 10 Chad Ochocinco was held to just 44 yards receiving, but the Bengals pulled off an early-season must-win against Baltimore, allowing him to celebrate obligatorily: Chiefs 16, Browns 14 Tight game, but I missed it. I’m pretty sure this photo’s from the right game: Broncos 31, Seahawks 14 Denver notched their first win after holding the visiting Seahawks scoreless the entire first half. Seattle Offensive Coordinator Jeremy Bates used up his entire play chart, to no avail: Chargers 38, Jaguars 13 San Diego emphatically pulled to 1-1 with a blowout win over Jacksonville. Fullback Mike Tolbert ran for two TDs and debuted his newly-perfected “I Am Constipated For A Super Bowl” celebration move: Texans 30, Redskins 27 (OT) When this game was 27-10 Washington, I yelled at the tickerbar “I told you this Texans bandwagon is ridiculous, it happens every year and they always blow it,” and then they came back to win in overtime, thus puncturing my “Texans bandwagon is ridiculous” bandwagon, at least for the time being. Mike Shanahan was pissed: Dolphins 14, Vikings 10 Last but not least, here’s Brett Favre side-by-side with 34-year-old Springfield Heights 90210 star Kyle Darren: First “Favre is old” joke on the internet? Yaaaay!!! I am literally Neil Armstrong. NFL Week 2 Reactions? Excitement? Anger? Apathy? Humor? Humour? Comment away.Tyler Perry

James Franco Talks 'Blurring' Acting And Reality In '127 Hours'
'The way we approached the performance is authentic,' he tells MTV News.By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
James Franco and Danny Boyle
Photo: MTV News
Toward the end of the exhaustive Moab, Utah, shoot for "127 Hours," James Franco found himself on the edge of a cliff. Portraying a real-life hiker forced to amputate part of his arm to escape a fallen boulder, Franco was in the midst of repelling down the steep face when he slipped and experienced the terrifying sensation of falling.
He was rigged with safety lines, of course, but as the actor himself admitted to MTV News, "I was scared for a second."
The shot actually made it into the film. Again and again throughout the shoot, Franco and director Danny Boyle ("Slumdog Millionaire") strove for such moments of authenticity. At another point in the shoot, Franco found himself struggling for 15 minutes to tie up a harness with just one hand.
"I yelled out a couple times, 'Eff!' " he said. "That was the character and me blurring at that moment. It really showed that the way we approached the performance is authentic on a real level, blurring the line of acting and experiencing."
The entire production was a challenge, but it's one Boyle always wanted to take on and which, fresh off the Oscar-winning success of "Slumdog," he was not going to pass up.
"We had a small window in which to strike, when people really believe in you," the director said. "I'd always been fascinated with this idea of trapping someone. In a medium that's all about movement and change and constant vibration of images, I thought it would be wonderful to challenge that and make an action movie where the hero doesn't move."
The majority of the film takes place within a tight, rocky crevice, when Franco is pinned in place by the boulder. Only the actor and a cameraman could fit in, and Boyle had to watch from above via a video link. They'd shoot very long takes, as Franco went through a variety of experiences, from desperation to macabre escape.
"It wasn't like we'd cut and ask props to rig a pulley while James relaxes," Boyle said. "He had to rig it. He had to do everything."
Check out everything we've got on "127 Hours."

Pancakes Take On God And Let?s Argue About It
IHOP is suing IHOP. Are you confused? That’s EXACTLY why IHOP has to sue. When you think IHOP, you think pancake IHOP instead of prayer IHOP, and pancake IHOP is all like, “IHOP, you can’t go around calling yourself IHOP.” From the Huffington Post: The International House of Pancakes is suing another IHOP, the International House of Prayer, saying the church mission shouldn’t be allowed to take advantage of the restaurant chain’s famous name and acronym. The Kansas City Star reports that the chain says it sued only after the church mission refused repeated requests to stop using the IHOP acronym. Restaurant spokesman Patrick Lenow said the church has expanded and some branches are serving food. The lawsuit was filed last week in federal court in Los Angeles. This is like that classic Who’s On IHOP sketch. For real though… who even believes in pancakes? But for real, for real… The real IHOP is right, right? As a thing, you can’t just take on the name of another thing and use it as your thing just because your thing is a religious thing and it was sort of a “cute” thing to do at first when you were just a small thing that didn’t SERVE THINGS EXACTLY THE SAME WAY THE FIRST THING DOES! Someone want to argue about this with me? Let’s DO this. But here’s a favor I want you to do for me. When you type in your clearly wrong arguments in the comment section, list your name as Noah. That way it will look like Noah on the side of IHOP is arguing with Noah who clearly sides with IHOP.Mariah Carey

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry Score MTV Europe Music Awards Nominations
Gaga and Perry tie with five nominations each; Eminem close behind them with four nominations.By Jocelyn Vena

It'll be somewhat of a girls' night out at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards in November, with Lady Gaga and Katy Perry tied at five nominations each.
The ladies will go head-to-head in four categories: Best Pop Act, Best Song, Best Female Act and Best Video. Gaga is also up for Best Live Act, while Perry, who hosted the show last year, is up for Best World Stage performance for her fifth nomination.
Eminem follows right behind the ladies with four nominations: Best Song, Best Male Act, Best Hip Hop and Best Video for his Rihanna collaboration "Love the Way You Lie."
But it wouldn't be an awards show without Justin Bieber. Bieber, who won the Best New Artist Moonman at the VMAs last week, will compete against Ke$ha, B.o.B, Jason Derülo and Plan B as a Best New Act nominee at the EMAs.
Best Rock nominees include Kings of Leon, Linkin Park, 30 Seconds to Mars, Muse and Ozzy Osbourne. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry will compete against Usher, Miley Cyrus and Rihanna in the Best Pop category.
Justin Bieber is also up for Best Male, along with Eminem, Usher, Enrique Iglesias and awards show rabble-rouser Kanye West. Gaga and Katy Perry once again face off against Miley Cyrus and Rihanna in the Best Female category, this time joined by Shakira.
Best Alternative nominees include Gorillaz, Gossip, Paramore, Vampire Weekend and Arcade Fire. Best Hip Hop nominees are T.I., Eminem, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg.
Usher's "OMG" will try to fend off Katy Perry's "California Gurls," Eminem and Rihanna's "Love the Way You Lie," Rihanna's "Rude Boy" and Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" for Best Song. 30 Seconds to Mars' "Kings and Queens," Katy Perry's "California Gurls," Lady Gaga and Beyoncé's "Telephone," Plan B's "Prayin'," and Eminem and Rihanna's "Love the Way You Lie" are all competing for Best Video.
